About the show
During Stockholm Craft Week, Extension Art Space presents On the Way Through Chungjang-ro, a solo exhibition by Eun-Jeong Park.
Through sewing-machine drawing, Park has created a visual archive of Gwangju, recording buildings, streets, passersby, and daily life around Chungjang-ro.
Chungjang-ro is a central commercial and cultural district in Gwangju. It is also connected to the May 18 Democratization Movement, which took place in Gwangju from 18 to 27 May 1980, when many citizens sacrificed their lives in the struggle for democracy. The work of Park does not document the movement but attends to how its memory remains present within daily urban life.
Park has observed Chungjang-ro and built a visual archive in which buildings, people, routes, and fragments of daily life become part of a larger record connecting the city, its people, and its histories.
Park works with sewing-machine drawing, a textile practice related to machine embroidery in which the sewing-machine needle becomes a drawing instrument.
The exhibition started after a meeting in Gwangju, where curator Abir Boukhari visited the studio of Park while installing the AllArtNow Pavilion Exile City at Chungjang 22, presented as part of the 16th Gwangju Biennale. Boukhari later invited Park to present the work in Stockholm.
The work was not produced for the pavilion but enters a curatorial dialogue with it through questions of place, memory, and belonging.
