Join us for a special literary evening as part of the Goethe-Institut’s ON THE ROAD / UNTERWEGS initiative. Two of Germany’s most compelling young authors — Sonali Beher and Iven Yorick Fenker, both students at the German Institute for Literature Leipzig — will share their work in readings (English and German) and discuss themes of identity, culture, and transatlantic exchange.
An Evening of Literature & Conversation
📅 Tuesday, September 9, 2025 | 6:00 PM
(Doors open at 5:30 PM)
📍 German Society of Pennsylvania
🎟 Admission: Free – all are welcome (please register below)
The evening will be moderated by Maiken Scott, public radio host and Karlsruhe native, and will include time for audience Q&A and informal conversation.
ON THE ROAD / UNTERWEGS is a Goethe-Institut USA campaign, “Among Friends” (Unter Freunden), designed to revitalize the transatlantic partnership for a new generation and to celebrate the power of storytelling across borders. This initiative is held under the patronage of Professor Dr. Ulrike Draesner.

About the Authors
Sonali Beher (b. 1997) studied English and Political Science in Heidelberg and at the University of Washington before beginning her studies at the German Institute for Literature Leipzig in 2023. She writes across genres — prose, essays, poetry, and drama — often exploring how the personal and political intersect, with themes of German identity, womanhood, and labor. Her short play Mensch mit Kopf was staged at the Kabinetttheater in Vienna in 2024.
Iven Yorick Fenker (b. 1994) grew up in the Harz region of Germany, once divided by the inner-German border. His work explores masculinity, fascism, football, and love. In addition to his literary studies in Leipzig, he works as a writer, filmmaker, and journalist, contributing to outlets such as DIE ZEIT, Theater der Zeit, and nachtkritik.de. His text Dornen Donner Stoßgebet was nominated for the Wortmeldungen Förderpreis, and his film die kastanie won the Youth Jury Prize at the Vienna Shorts 2025.
This event is presented in collaboration with the Goethe-Institut USA.
