About this Event
Matthew Butler is a Professor of the History of Mexico at the University of Texas at Austin. Join him for a discussion on how Tom Lea, unlike any other American, gained acceptance in the world of Mexican bullfighting during its golden age in the 1940s.
Explore Lea’s thoughts on bullfighting, which he later fictionalized in his 1949 novel, The Brave Bulls. Discover his adventures on Mexican bull-breeding ranches as he sought the country’s ‘toros bravos’. Discuss how Tom Lea’s travels and philosophy regarding Mexico relate to his ideas about Texan cattle and the concept of Texanness.
This event will also be presented Thursday, March 4, from 3-5 p.m. at UT Austin Benson Conference Room, Sid Richardson Hall.
