OmniArts Nebraska proudly presents the first production of its 15th season, The Sunset Limited, with direction by Jillian Carter, assistant direction by Erin Mundus, and scenic and lighting design by Dustin Witte.
This 2006 work by Pulitzer Prize winner Cormac McCarthy is an intense two-character play subtitled “A Novel in Dramatic Form,” due to the dense nature of its topics and dialogue. While heavy in some ways and light in others, the play manages to remain engaging and relevant 20 years later. This production marks the first time OmniArts Nebraska has reimagined a play from a previous season, having presented The Sunset Limited over a decade ago.
A man brings a failed suicide victim from a subway platform to his Harlem apartment, “and the world is set before us with fever-dream clarity.”
The atheist and the saved Christian. The professor and the laborer. The rescuer and the one who does not wish to be rescued. Cormac McCarthy chose to name them Black and White, as indeed they are.
Preparing to present 2006's The Sunset Limited 20 years later, the racial dynamics seemed simplistic and in need of subversion. After all, a show that presents universal debates and philosophical arguments is more gray than anything. Same words, same characters, more nuance, more gray.
The Sunset Limited boasts the dynamic duo of Max Antoine and Dustin Witte. Antoine has returned from New York City to play Black in his self-proclaimed “last ever performance in Lincoln,” having wanted to play the role for years. Witte played White previously and is excited to reinterpret the role with a different vision. Jillian Carter and Erin Mundus are thrilled to direct the show with an eye on critical race theory and how this complicated work still holds value worth examining. Themes of faith, nihilism, privilege, value, isolation, injustice, and existence abound in the script and in the production process.
