About this Event
Olev Muska + Heiki
Estonian folk goes electric. Toronto electronics go deep. Olev Muska and Heiki bring 2 distinctive corners of the electronic underground to BSMT254 for a night of playful synth explorations, dub-heavy grooves and sounds that take the scenic route. Connecting Muska’s adventurous folk experiments with Heiki’s deep techno and spacious electronics, this double bill brings decades of independent music-making into the basement. Come with open ears and room to move.
Olev Muska
Australian-born Estonian electronic pioneer Olev Muska has been putting traditional songs through synthesizers since the late 1970s. His DIY single Tuljak! and 1985 album Old Estonian Waltzes helped lay the foundations of Estonian folktronica, sending familiar melodies into strange new territory. Moving between synth-pop, experimental electronics and folk, his music is curious, mischievous and full of unexpected turns. Reissues through Frotee and Left Ear Records have brought his early explorations to a new generation of listeners.
Heiki
Heiki Sillaste is a longtime fixture of Toronto’s electronic underground, with roots stretching back to 1987. His projects include industrial-techno outfit Digital Poodle and electronic explorers Kinder Atom, alongside a solo catalogue spanning deep techno, dub and ambient. He also runs Toronto’s paper+sound label. Expect a sound world built around weighty bass, spacious textures and a feel for the hypnotic possibilities of repetition.
