One of the classics of mid-20th-century English theatre, Priestley’s daring play takes place in an English industrial city, where an eminently respectable British family is subject to a routine inquiry in connection with the suicide of a young girl. An inspector calls on the family to interrogate them, and during the course of his questioning, each of them is implicated in the girl’s undoing.
