Oedipus, by Pali Bhupinder Singh, is a contemporary play that explores the complex relationship between violence, hatred, memory and human desire. Set against an atmosphere shaped by communal conflict, the play brings together a young man and a middle-aged woman in an intense and unsettling encounter.
As their past and present begin to collide, the characters are forced to confront buried emotions, inherited prejudices and the consequences of violence. Gradually, the boundaries between hatred, vulnerability, intimacy and identity begin to blur.
Rather than retelling the Greek myth of Oedipus, the play uses the idea of the Oedipus complex as a starting point to examine contemporary human relationships and the psychological impact of violence and social conditioning.
A provocative and emotionally charged theatrical experience, Oedipus asks what happens when hatred, memory and desire confront one another within the fragile space of human relationships.
