Is there something like a European identity? Jacques Attali says that perhaps it is only art provides a convincing positive answer to this question.
It is not necessarily the work of a European artist (because Europe has exported its worldview to other continents), nor is it necessarily derived from a European heritage (because Europe has integrated forms of art from elsewhere into its conception of art). The identity of European art comes precisely from its ability, practically unique in the world, to integrate immense cultures from elsewhere, in time and space, to transcend them and give them a new form.
In time: European art is the heir to Greek statuary, drama, and poetry, biblical narrative, Latin statuary, drama, and poetry, Orthodox icons, Gaelic, Germanic, Nordic narratives, Romanesque and then Gothic architecture, Christian religious painting, and everything that followed, up to today. Without ever cutting itself off from its past or attempting to forget it.
In space: it has always been very open to influences from elsewhere: from the Greek period, there are Egyptian, Persian, Indian influences. And very quickly thereafter, Chinese, Arab, African, and then Native American influences. And today, European art, more than any other, receives, accepts, transforms, everything that comes from elsewhere.
Thus is revealed, through art, the European identity: being confident enough to not be afraid to draw from what comes from elsewhere. This must not be forgotten. (Abridged from an original text by Jacques Attali, 2024)
