About this Event
"Unlocking Underwater Innovation: The Elevator Pitch"
SUT would like to invite you to the October Evening Technical Meeting. Held in collaboration with the Subsea Innovation Cluster Australia (SICA). Join us at the Parmelia Hilton Perth on Wednesday, 14 October 2026, for an engaging "Elevator Pitch" session focused on Unlocking Underwater Innovation. This Show & Tell evening offers a vibrant platform for subsea professionals to share fast-paced, 10-minute technical insights on ground-breaking developments, operational lessons, and emerging technologies shaping the future of the underwater community.
Introducing our presenters:
Justin Motroni, SEA Global
Title: FSO Concept Optimisation via Automated Detailed Offloading Analysis
Concept design for offshore floating facilities includes balancing inherent trade-offs between storage capacity requirements and offloading availability. Various design decisions can have complex interactions affecting the system response; from the selection of vessel size and offloading mechanism to the mooring and fender design. When considered with multidirectional metocean loading that varies over time, an optimum system solution can be challenging to identify.
SEA have applied an automated workflow for performing detailed integrated floating system modelling in the concept phase to determine annualised availability metrics across multiple design configurations. This presentation outlines the approach and its effectiveness in concept design optimisation.
Stephan Freychet, TSC Subsea
Title: ORCA Hull-Crawling Robot: Real-Time Monitoring for Mooring Line Pull-In and Connection
The ORCA is a robotic crawler used for in-service hull inspections, offering a deck-launched alternative to divers and ROVs. During a recent campaign, ORCA was deployed through a ~300 mm deck opening on a 100 m umbilical, navigating beneath the hull and around the bilge keel to monitor turret pull-in and connection activities in restricted, splash-zone conditions. With 1080p HD video, 10x optical zoom, and stable hull-mounted positioning, ORCA delivered continuous real-time visibility across 12 mooring line connections, including a single deployment exceeding 36 hours in 2.5–3 m sea states — becoming the campaign's primary monitoring feed.
Thomas Seeber, Atteris
Title: Subsea pipeline FEA for extreme seismic events
The Hutt City Wharfline (HCWL) is a critical fuel transfer asset supplying four bulk fuel terminals. The existing pipeline on the Seaview Wharf approach structure could not meet modern Importance Level 4 (IL4) seismic performance requirements, creating a risk to fuel supply resilience following a major earthquake and necessitating a replacement solution capable of operating under extreme natural hazard loading.
A replacement system comprising on-wharf, onshore, and submarine pipeline was developed using advanced finite element analysis and nonlinear seismic modelling to assess earthquake, tsunami, and soil-structure interaction effects. The optimised design incorporated a trenched subsea pipeline, seismic-resistant riser, and enhanced corrosion protection, delivering a resilient and maintainable asset for long-term fuel transfer reliability.

Title: Wellhead Connection System
The Wellhead Connection System was developed to reconnect to an aging wellhead with the level of integrity required to support safe intervention and abandonment.
With the protective cap missing and cathodic protection long depleted, the exposed wellhead in shallow Australian waters had been impacted and worn by trawling activity and was in no state to support rig-based intervention. A diverless in-situ machining and connection system was developed to restore rig access, and was taken through a demanding qualification test program. The system succeeded on first attempt offshore - enabling permanent abandonment of a 1970’s exploration well to today’s integrity standards

Title: Remote USV Bathymetric Survey in Crocodile-Inhabited Waters: Operational Challenges and Lessons Learned
Conducting hydrographic surveys in remote, crocodile-inhabited waterways presents significant safety, environmental and logistical challenges. This presentation examines a survey campaign in Kowanyama, Far North Queensland, where personnel and survey equipment - including the USV itself, were mobilised by aircraft into a remote operating environment. Tight tidal and weather windows required careful planning and efficient deployment. A Uni-Mini USV integrated with a Norbit iWBMS, Valeport Swift SVP, QINSY9 and G4 positioning corrections was used to acquire high-resolution bathymetric data for flood modelling and barge-access assessment. The case study explores mobilisation, system integration, survey execution, data quality and lessons learned from operating autonomous survey technology in challenging, environmentally sensitive waterways.

Title: Helical Pile Shared Anchoring Systems for Offshore Renewable Energy (ORE)
A presentation on the development and demonstration of a shared anchoring system using helical pile foundations for Offshore Renewable Energy (ORE) applications.
Supported through an Australian Government CRC-P grant in partnership with UWA & NGI and forming a key element of WaveX’s Albany Large Scale Pilot (LSP) project, the scope assesses the technical, economic and environmental benefits of shared mooring and anchoring infrastructure, with a goal of demonstrating how helical piles can provide a low-impact, scalable and economical foundations while enabling multiple assets to share common anchor points, reducing installation costs, seabed disturbance and maintenance requirements for future ORE developments.
