About this Event
Melanesia is home to some of the world’s richest biological and cultural diversity. The region has also been shaped by a legacy of resource and labour extraction, colonialism, and social and political conflict. This has impacted sustainable development and biodiversity conversation for many communities.
Community organisations from across Melanesia in the University of Melbourne’s Melanesia Bio-Cultural Network draw on Indigenous knowledge, spiritual practices and conservation science to address these challenges, support biodiversity and strengthen community wellbeing.
This year’s Oceania Oration brings together leaders from Solomon Islands and the Autonomous Region of Bougainville to share insights from their work and explore the connections between conservation, culture and community wellbeing.
