Our doors closed at the end of June, but our work isn’t over. Here’s what we accomplished—and what comes next. When we began planning five years ago, our goal was a six-month pop-up museum: raise initial funds through crowdfunding, demonstrate that we could run a museum, and show that people would come. An affordable lease gave us the chance to try a longer-term home.
In eight months, we welcomed approximately 5,000 visitors and built something worth continuing:
• More than 125 paid memberships
• Nearly $40,000 in admission, membership, and merchandise sales
• Two exhibits and 12 artist panels, presentations, and signings
• A $40,000 grant to teach cartoon arts in underrepresented communities
• More than 700 mailing list subscribers
• Over 3,500 Instagram and nearly 800 Facebook followers
• A volunteer pool of more than 200 people
After five years as a nonprofit, we have a strong foundation. But admissions and merchandise sales couldn’t cover our operating costs, so we made the difficult decision to pause museum operations.
On November 21–22, our board will meet to develop a two-year plan toward a permanent museum with a full-time director and grant writer. Our target is approximately $800,000 in grants and private funding to cover two years of rent, utilities, and other operating expenses.
Meanwhile, we’d love to see you at our next event!
