Directed by Kassem Hawal and based on Ghassan Kanafani’s novella Returning to Haifa, the film is considered the first Palestinian-produced fiction film. On April 21, 1948, the quiet life of Haifa turned into hell amid mortar shelling, and its people were forced to flee their city. One Palestinian family, unable to reach home to carry their infant son, Khaldoun, with them, left without him. The search for him haunted them for twenty years. In 1967, Saeed and Safiyya returned to Haifa, hoping to find out what became of the child they left behind nearly two decades earlier.
About the filmmaker: Born in 1940 in Basra, Iraq, Kassem Hawal is an award-winning Iraqi director who studied theatre acting and directing at the Institute of Fine Arts in Baghdad. In 1970 he left Iraq for Lebanon and Syria, where he focused on making political films, including work with the PLO. He has directed 28 documentaries and 5 features. Active in arts and culture across the Arab world, he has been honored by film festivals and by cultural and non-cultural organizations for his role in Arab and humanitarian culture.
