2026 m. spalio 9 d. 16 val.

FROM TEXTILES TO SPACE: POLISH ARTISTS' EXPERIMENTS WITH MATERIAL, ENVIRONMENT AND PERCEPTION
On 9 October 2026 at 4 p.m., the M. K. Čiurlionis National Museum of Art (55 V. Putvinskio St., Kaunas) invites you to a programme of lectures and film screenings exploring experiments in Polish textile art in the 1970s – a period when textiles moved beyond the conventional boundaries of material and became part of sculpture, space, architecture, and the environment.
This public programme accompanying Barbara Kasten’s exhibition "Post-Abstraction" returns to an important episode in the artist’s biography. In 1971–1972, during her Fulbright fellowship in Poland, Barbara Kasten worked in the studio of Magdalena Abakanowicz, at a time when textiles were becoming an important field for experimentation with material, sculpture, and space on the Polish art scene.
The programme will feature lectures by researchers specialising in the history of Polish art and textiles, presenting different aspects of this period.
In his lecture on Krystyna Wojtyna-Drouet, Jędrzej Zakrzewski will examine the artist’s practice and her experiments with textiles and materials, as well as the ways in which themes of everyday life, labour, and artistic independence intersect in her work.
In her lecture on Ewa Pachucka, Karolina Łabowicz-Dymanus will present large-scale woven and crocheted works in which textiles become sculptural and spatial structures. The lecture will explore how, in Pachucka’s practice, textiles intersect with architecture, the environment, and the viewer’s experience.
Katarzyna Sacha's presentation will present Polish textile art from kilims, rugs, and interior decoration; through postwar studios, cooperatives, and the Institute of Industrial Design; to monumental, three-dimensional works exhibited in Lausanne and museums around the world. She will show that the strength of Polish textile art lay in its blend of constraint and freedom: material shortages encouraged experimentation with jute, sisal, hemp, rope, wicker, and industrial waste while women artists often made the works themselves, allowing them to respond directly to the materials as they worked, rather than follow a preparatory design.
The programme will also include two film screenings. The film "Utkane / Woven" by Maria Oblicka and Alexander Cabeza-Triggo will explore Krystyna Wojtyna-Drouet’s artistic practice, biography, and everyday working environment. A film by Iwona Oleszczuk will also be screened. Both films will be shown with Lithuanian subtitles.
The lectures and film screenings will offer an opportunity to take a closer look at the artists, institutions, and creative practices that transformed the understanding of textile art, while also providing a deeper insight into the environment in which Barbara Kasten encountered new possibilities offered by material, space, and sculpture.
Admission: with a museum admission ticket.
The lectures will be held in English.
