About this Event
Speculative fiction is a broad genre. Also known as “what-if” books, spec fic changes the laws of what’s real or possible in society as we know it, then speculates on the outcome of these changes. Think sci-fi, fantasy, dystopian, etc!
Our pick for this month is The Other Valley by Scott Alexander Howard, a haunting debut set in a remote valley town flanked by two neighboring valleys — one twenty years in the past, one twenty years in the future. Sixteen-year-old Odile is training for a coveted seat on the Conseil, the body that governs passage between valleys, when she spots two grieving visitors from the future and realizes they've come to see someone who's still alive on her side. Part coming-of-age story, part meditation on grief and time, it's a novel about what we owe the people we love, and whether the rules meant to protect us are worth breaking.
