Built in 1901 at the corner of Prince Avenue and Hill Street, Old Fire Hall No. 2 has been a familiar landmark in Athens' Cobbham neighborhood for 125 years. Once home to horse-drawn fire wagons and the firefighters who served a growing city, the building has since found new life as the headquarters of Historic Athens.Join us this Tuesday for November History Hour as we explore the history of Athens’ neighborhood-led fire brigades and the development of the city’s first fire halls following the Civil War. Discover the story behind Old Fire Hall No. 2, from its early days serving the community to its distinctive Victorian architecture and its present-day role as Historic Athens. Through its history, explore how this landmark has evolved alongside the city it continues to serve.
Presented by Tommy Valentine, PhD, Joey Briggs, Historic Athens Research Fellow, and Cari Goetcheus, Professor of Historic Preservation at the University of Georgia.
