In this fascinating talk Katy Turbitt, 3MBS Marketing & Engagement Manager and Dr Joel Crotty, 3MBS Board Member, will explore the story of Melbourne’s classical music and jazz community radio station, from its beginnings to its place in the city’s cultural life today. The station's roots tie directly back to Kew: it officially launched in 1975 as Victoria's very first licensed FM radio station, making its first broadcasts out of a workshop on Cotham Road in Kew before relocating to Abbotsford in 2007. Discover the people, ideas and determination behind the establishment of 3MBS Melbourne 103.5FM, the challenges of building an independent community broadcaster, and the volunteers, presenters and musicians who have shaped the station over five decades. Through stories, archival photographs and reflections on changing broadcasting technology, the talk celebrates 3MBS’s enduring commitment to sharing music, supporting local artists and connecting listeners with Melbourne’s musical life. This should be a most interesting evening with supper to follow the talk.
