About this Event

Got a broken item like a torn shirt, faulty blender or worn-out toy? Bring them to a Fix-It Clinic and learn hands-on repair skills with help from our expert volunteers—free of charge!

How it works: Bring up to two items (excluding computers, cellphones, and tablets) and work with our coaches to learn how to fix them. Tools will be provided, but feel free to bring your own. If you know your item needs a replacement part, please bring it with you. While we can't guarantee every item will be repaired, you'll learn how it works and what you may need to fix it. Note that ticket times are approximate and we cannot guarantee you will be seen during that time frame. Sometimes, there is a wait to work with a volunteer.

Drop-off option: Can't attend in person? Drop off your item at the Lamar Senior Activity Center (2874 Shoal Crest Ave.), November 2-5. We'll try to fix it, and you can pick it up November 9-13. Items not claimed by November 13 will be donated. Space is limited, and a waiver is required.

New policy: We will no longer work on computers, cell phones, or tablets at the Fix-It Clinic. These projects often require extensive troubleshooting and take up a lot of our volunteers' time. Instead, we encourage you to subscribe to the Fix-It Austin newsletter to receive announcements of upcoming workshops focused on electronics repair, consult the Austin Reuse Directory to find a professional repair shop, and/or look for a repair guide on the IFixIt website.

The City of Austin is committed to compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act. Reasonable modifications and equal access to communications will be provided upon request. For assistance please contact (512) 974-3916 or Relay Texas 7-1-1.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How many items can I bring?

Each attendee is limited to bringing a maximum of two items per clinic. This is to make sure everyone has the chance to work with our wonderful volunteer repair coaches.

How do I register to bring two items?

Reserve a ticket for each item you plan to bring. Your two tickets should be in different time slots so you have time to work on each one.

Does having a ticket for a specific time slot guarantee I will be served during that time?

While we do our best to assist participants within their reserved time, we can’t guarantee it. Some items take longer to repair than others, and certain categories, like electronics/miscellaneous, are especially popular and may experience longer wait times.

Who can attend?

Children under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.

What kind of items can I bring to fix?

Clothes, jewelry (except fine jewelry that requires soldering), toys, small appliances, electronics (except cell phones, tablets, and laptops). Do not bring large appliances (like washers and dryers) or anything with a gas engine.

What if I can't go on November 7?

Can't attend in person? Drop off your item at the Lamar Senior Activity Center branch (2874 Shoal Crest Ave.) from November 2–5. We’ll try to fix it, and you can pick it up from November 9–13. Items not claimed before November 13 will be donated. Space is limited and a waiver is required.

How can I volunteer at the clinic?

We’re always looking for repair coaches! Email us at [email protected] or check out our volunteer management platform GivePulse to sign up for a shift.

I think my item needs a spare part. Do you have it on hand?

We provide lots of common tools and consumable parts, like thread, jewelry clasps, electronic fuses, etc. If your item needs a specific spare part, for example, something that would have to be ordered from the manufacturer, you’ll need to buy it in advance and bring it with you.
