Insiders Without Badges: What Three Decades of Non-Human Access Teach Us About AI Agents
Description:
Security teams have admitted a new class of non-human actor inside the perimeter roughly once a decade. Service accounts in the 2000s. Cloud admin roles in the 2010s. CI/CD pipelines with standing tokens in the 2020s. The pattern never changed: grant broad access so the thing works, discover it has quietly become the most privileged identity in the environment, then spend years retrofitting the controls that should have existed from the start. AI agents are the fourth round, and the stakes are higher.
Agents hold the same access as employees, operate inside the perimeter, act at machine speed, and can be manipulated by anyone who can get text in front of them. They are insiders without a badge, a manager, or an exit interview, and most organizations have no program that governs them. This session traces what went wrong in each previous round, what finally fixed it, and why the fix was the same every time: stop trusting the identity and start governing the action. We then apply that lesson to agents. Which insider risk controls transfer directly. Which have no machine equivalent. And what the end state looks like if we skip the decade of cleanup this time.
