About this Event

Learn evidence-based strategies to cut sodium without sacrificing the rich, comforting flavors of classic Chinese cuisine.

Chinese Culinary Traditions for Heart and Kidney Health

Managing blood pressure, kidney health, or heart health shouldn’t mean eating bland, uninspiring meals or abandoning the traditional foods you love.

Join Amy Yiu, RD, CDE, and Jessica Lee, RD, CDE, for Nourish with Flavor, an engaging, hands-on cooking workshop designed to bridge clinical science with rich Chinese culinary traditions.

Standard diet advice often tells people to cut out traditional seasonings, sauces, and soups entirely. In this workshop, we will show you how to use smart culinary swaps, low-sodium flavor builders, and aromatic herbs and spices to keep your favorite dishes delicious, satisfying, and heart-healthy.

Featured Menu & Cooking Demonstration
  • Velvety Harvest Soup: A rich, comforting, creamy kabocha squash soup infused with fresh ginger and warming aromatics.
  • Savory Asian Noodle Stir-Fry: A colorful, protein-rich noodle dish made with a specially crafted, flavor-packed low-sodium sauce.
  • Golden Nourish Tea: A comforting, seasonal hot beverage crafted with apple or pear, goji berries, red dates, and fresh ginger slices.

What You Will Learn
  • Flavor Without Excessive Salt: How to build deep, savory (umami) flavor bases using herbs, aromatics, ginger, and low-sodium techniques.
  • Culturally Nuanced Swaps: Practical ways to modify classic Chinese soups, noodles, teas, and sauces for lower sodium and balanced nutrition while preserving authentic taste.
  • Evidence-Based Nutrition: Clear, practical guidance from Certified Diabetes Educators on managing sodium for hypertension, kidney health, and overall metabolic wellness.
  • Live Demonstration & Tasting: Watch step-by-step cooking demonstrations and sample all featured dishes and beverages.

Take-Home Materials

All participants will bring home a recipe booklet with nutrition information, low-sodium cooking tips, and practical substitutions.

Who Should Attend?
  • Individuals managing high blood pressure, diabetes, or early-stage kidney health concerns who want practical food solutions.
  • Anyone interested in learning low-sodium cooking techniques that respect Asian culinary traditions.
