NOSFERATU: An Improvised Audio and Visual Symphony of Horror
By Justin James and Martin Southall
A live, improvised audio-visual performance accompanying F. W. Murnau’s 1922 silent horror masterpiece, Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror.
Justin James and Martin Southall reimagine the film through an evolving interplay of electronic sound, synthesis, rhythm, atmosphere, and moving image. Rather than relying on a fixed score, the performance unfolds in real time, using improvisation to respond to the film’s imagery, pacing, and psychological tension.
Drawing on experimental electronic music, dark ambient textures, and sound design, the performance transforms the film into an immersive audiovisual experience. Drones, dissonance, recurring motifs, and shifting sonic landscapes build a sense of unease, tracing the movement between shadow and light, stillness and chaos, dread and revelation.
The result is both a live musical performance and a re-examination of early cinematic horror: a dialogue between a century-old film and contemporary electronic expression, where sound and image converge to create something unpredictable, visceral, and haunting.
