What is it?
Nosework is the fun sporting version of scent detection. Dogs must locate hidden scents and alert the handler to the location – similar to bomb and narcotic detection, but using essential oils for scent. Nosework is a true partnership sport: both dog and handler form a team and rely on each other.
Dogs will learn how to find odor, problem solve different scenarios, and alert their owner to the location of the hide. Owners will learn how to handle odor, how to make and place hides, how to identify alert behavior, and proper equipment/handling techniques.
Who is it for?
This is an intro-level course (no previous nosework experience required). All dogs can participate regardless of breed, size, or ability, though prior completion of Level 1 Obedience (or equivalent) is required or Puppy Advanced.
Dogs must be at least 1 year old.
Equipment
Students will receive a starter kit that includes the introductory odor so they can practice at home.
Students should bring 3 identical Tupperware containers with lids. Cheap dollar-store ones are fine. Any size/shape/type (small is better for easy handling) as long as they haven’t been used for food or other smelly substances in the past. Drill a few holes in the lids for venting.
Bring small, soft treats and a hungry dog. We will feed a lot at the beginning, so small treats are best.
