Welcome to the Tufting Internship!
Join us for a hands-on immersive experience at the Kwanlin Dün Cultural Centre on Sunday November 3rd, 10th & 24th. This 3-part series is perfect for anyone interested in the art of tufting. Progress your skills from beginner to advanced as you work alongside renowned Dené Artisan Maria Rose Sikyea of Caribou Woman Creations!
Proudly take home three unique tufted creations, perfect for Christmas gifting, along with your own hand-colored caribou hair bundles. Leave this internship equipped with the knowledge, skills and tools to continue tufting!
- Session 1 (November 3): Circular tufting – Craft studded earrings while mastering knot work techniques and discovering how to color caribou & moose hair.
- Session 2 (November 10): Floral tufting – Design a beautiful scissor case and explore the difference between moose and caribou hair. Plus, an introduction to the artistry of micro-tufting!
- Session 3 (November 24): Micro tufted ring – Create an intricate micro-tufted flower on a sterling silver bezel ring. This advanced session will refine precision skills for tiny, detailed designs. We’ll conclude with a celebratory Indian Bingo event!

Maria Rose Sikyea is a Young Dené mother of three children, living in the Yukon with her husband. She aims to advocate for healthy choices and hopes to thrive with connection to her Dené heritage. She believes most of humanity has forgotten that everything comes from Mother Earth, thus her desire is to inspire people to reconnect with their tribal ways through connection to the land. Maria works with materials harvested within nature’s cradling arms. Her art forms focus on old Dené traditional skills such as Tufting, Porcupine quillwork, etc. She has been teaching various skill-building workshops for 11+ years and is passionate about the “natural way” of her Athabaskan traditions. She hopes to inspire youth and all peoples to continue their connection/reconnect with their cultural background, in light of the future of our earth experience, as a whole. She hopes sharing some of her Indigenous culture can bring a lens of experience to simple appreciation for all of creation through her business Caribou Woman Creations.
