What is philosophy anyway, and what is it good for?Join the Norwood Practical Philosophy Club and Morrill Memorial Library for a weekly (Thursdays) discussion group designed to support examined and flourishing lives. Practical Philosophy is based on the idea that philosophy should be accessible to all, and not something reserved only for academics. Started in summer 2026 by Norwood residents, NPPC's first meeting in the library will be Thursday, November 5 at 6:30-8:30pm in the Trustees' Room.
The group welcomes intellectual curiosity and a willingness to reconsider one’s views. No previous philosophical study or advance preparation is required, and all are welcome!
For the NPPC, philosophical conversation supports the continuing examination of how we live. Participants consider what deserves their commitment, how their judgments guide their actions, and whether their ways of living withstand thoughtful scrutiny. The conversation of each meeting will focus on a single practical, ethical, social, or foundational philosophical topic, from examining how we live, to understanding ourselves and others, to examining knowledge and reality, and to considering our shared world.
For example, what is the essence of Love? What does it mean to be conscious? Where or what does consciousness come from and why? Or, where, if anywhere, does suffering or struggle play a role in the good life?
