In 2022, Development Chenango Corporation (Commerce Chenango) was awarded funding for a Downtown small project grant fund, some of which has been spent supporting property owners' renovations. The remaining funds, supplemented with contributions from Friends of the Park and local foundations, have been allocated to public art for Downtown Norwich.
The Norwich Public Art Initiative, a committed formed to steward the project, launched a Request for Artist Qualifications in June 2026. The committee received 111 submissions from artists across the country (and world!). After a round of public feedback and two rounds of evaluation, the committee selected three finalists per sculpture location, and four mural finalists, to produce site-specific design proposals.
