The Northwest Mesemb Show has been a fixture in the northern cactus and succulent calendar for over 30 years. Originally conceived by Mid Cheshire branch, it is now under the management of Manchester branch. Throughout its history, many mesemb enthusiasts have attended the event both as participants and visitors. Today, this show stands out as the only competitive event in the entire British Isles dedicated exclusively to the Aizoaceae. In contrast to cacti, which are found throughout the Americas — including Central America, the Caribbean, the Galapagos Islands — and other succulents that naturally grow in most Mediterranean and tropical regions worldwide, about 95% of all mesembs grow in southern Africa, primarily South Africa and Namibia. Some have been introduced to the Mediterranean countries by humans, but they do not naturally occur there, even though they flourish in those conditions.
We encourage you to enter the show, even if you only have one plant to submit, and if perhaps you don't grow mesembs, do please come along and enjoy the many remarkable plants on display. Every entry, and every attendance, helps support the continuation of this important event.
Visitors are welcome from 10:15 am. There is plenty of parking available in two nearby car parks, as well as on the street outside the venue. Several vendors will be present at the show offering a wide variety of cacti, other succulent plants and mesembs.
Refreshments will be available until 1:30pm at very reasonable prices, prepared by our dedicated kitchen team, after which we welcome our guest speaker. This year, we are pleased to welcome Andy Young, who will be giving us a talk entitled "Hunting Mesembs Off the Beaten Track."
