THE STORY OF NOMUYO

Inspired by the hidden gem Tanaka-Ya in Akashi, Japan, NOMUYO brings a slice of that magic to London.

Tanaka-Ya is a cherished neighbourhood sake shop, lovingly run by third-generation owner Yasuki Tanaka—a passionate sake enthusiast and keen angler. Behind its modest façade lies a narrow corridor that leads to a hidden standing-bar izakaya.

There, his adorable wife, Yuko and her all-female team serve up expertly crafted tsumami (Japanese small plates) alongside a thoughtfully curated, ever-changing selection of premium sake—often featuring seafood freshly caught by Yuko’s husband, Tanaka-san.

Recreating this unique experience in London has long been our dream.

At NOMUYO, the food is lovingly prepared by a team of three talented female chefs, just like at Tanaka-Ya:

  • Akemi Yokoyama (@gohan.london) is a highly respected Japanese food specialist, chef, presenter, writer and educator based in London. She is the Principal of Sozai Cooking School, a committee member of the Japanese Culinary Academy EU, and Culinary Officer of the British Sake Association.
  • Remi Kumagai, a devoted Tanaka-Ya guest, brings her deep passion for sake and years of experience supporting Japanese breweries with international expansion.
  • Nobuko Ubukata adds her creative flair for Asian fusion cuisine, shaped by her years living in Shanghai and Hong Kong.

The sake pairing is expertly curated by Asami Tasaka of World Sake Imports UK, highly regarded sake expert, and our trusted collaborator in sake and food pairings.

Our venue, The Fishmongers Kitchen, is a working fishmonger headed by former NOBU chef Tony Licastro — a fitting setting for an evening celebrating Japanese food, fresh seafood and sake.

Join us for an authentic tachinomi (standing bar) experience—intimate, flavourful, and full of heart.

Your ticket includes a tasting experience of 5 delicious Japanese and Oriental fusion izakaya-style dishes, inspired by Japan’s beloved standing bar Tanaka-Ya. Each dish is carefully paired with 5 premium sake selections - all curated by Asami Tasaka of World Sake Imports.

Please note: This is a standing event, with no seating provided - just like Tanaka-Ya, you’ll be enjoying your food and drinks while gathered around the bar.

Join us for an evening of inspired flavours, storytelling, and the magic of food and sake.
