The songs of Walter Becker and Donald Fagen, aka Steely Dan, stood alone in 1970s rock, with cryptic, pungent lyrics and sophisticated, detailed music deeply influenced by “the best jazz players of the ‘50s and ‘60s”. Chris Ingham’s Steely Jazz re-examines the Dan canon, illuminating the singular melodies and rich harmonies while exploring the possibilities of the small jazz group. Featuring well-known pieces such as Rikki Don’t Lose That Number, Josie and Reelin’ in the Years, alongside classic tracks and deep cuts from masterpiece albums including Aja, Gaucho, Countdown to Ecstasy and Katy Lied, Steely Jazz is a fresh and exciting celebration of two giants of 20th-century popular music. Led by acclaimed pianist, singer and guitarist Chris Ingham, the quintet features some of Britain’s finest jazz musicians, including trumpeter and composer Paul Higgs, renowned bassist Geoff Gascoyne and versatile drummer George Double. “A breathtaking band” – The Cambridge Critique; “Excellent interpretations…full of compositional and improvisational riches” – Jazz Journal.
Newnham Jazz Club is an intimate, jazz venue with a relaxed cabaret-style setting, giving audiences an opportunity to enjoy great live music up close. A licensed bar is available throughout the evening.
