Have you been inspired by the Blockades of the World's Largest Coal Port? There are many things that make these events so powerful, but it is often the mass arrests that attract the most attention. This doesn't happen by accident. Rising Tide deliberately uses nonviolent direct action (NVDA) and civil disobedience as central parts of our strategy for creating change. Our actions are designed to win hearts and minds, build public support and challenge the systems driving the climate crisis. To win the story (our third principle), it is vital that we remain safe and nonviolent (our first principle). Taking part in NVDA doesn't necessarily mean risking arrest. There are many important roles that make our actions possible and help keep everyone safe. And whatever role we play, we all have a responsibility to uphold our commitment to nonviolence.
This free, interactive workshop will explore what we mean by nonviolent direct action, why it is such an important part of Rising Tide's strategy, and how each of us can contribute to keeping our actions safe and nonviolent. We'll also look at how to interact with police, the role of civil disobedience in our movement, and the different ways we can participate in NVDA.
Whether you're new to activism or have been involved in direct action for years, this is an opportunity to build your confidence, learn from one another, connect with other Rising Tide supporters and reflect on the role you can play in our movement.
