New York on Film: "Cloverfield" with Michael Gingold and Madeleine Koestner Celebrate spooky season with an evening screening of “Cloverfield” (2008) and watch a fictional disaster unfold in Lower Manhattan.
About this Event

On Tuesday, October 13, we’re thrilled to bring the groundbreaking “Cloverfield,” written by Drew Goddard and directed by Matt Reeves, to Lower Manhattan for a special screening at Alamo Drafthouse. What starts as a rooftop going-away party in Manhattan devolves into chaos when the skyline suddenly erupts. Found-footage horror meets a wild monster chase as a group of friends trek through New York City while it collapses around them.

“Cloverfield” combines a massive monster disaster with an intimate, handheld found-footage perspective to take the viewer into an unusually personal view of a blockbuster disaster.

After the screening, stay for a talkback session featuring film experts Michael Gingold, a renowned horror journalist and author known for his long-standing association with Fangoria magazine and his books on horror film history, and Madeleine Koestner, an NYC-based writer and film programmer, and founder of a horror-centric movie theater due to open in Brooklyn.

Our experts will unpack the film's themes and its unique place in horror cinema, exploring the ways in which "Cloverfield" diverges from typical disaster narratives, the found-footage subgenre, and how “Cloverfield”serves as an allegory for 9/11.

Whether you're a die-hard fan or discovering "Cloverfield" for the first time, this screening and talkback promise a thrilling and thought-provoking evening.

Tickets are $5 and include popcorn and a beverage. All proceeds will be donated to the Wildlife Conservation Society.

Please note that seating is not assigned and seats will be chosen on a first come, first served basis.

Michael Gingold has been writing about horror films and their creators since he was too young to see them without a parent or adult guardian (though he did anyway), starting with his Xerox fanzine Scareaphanalia. Michael is a former editor for Fangoria, and has been writing for the magazine since 1988 and the website since 2000. He is also a regular contributor to Rue Morgue magazine and Rue-morgue.com, Delirium magazine, and Inverse.com, and has written for Birth.Movies.Death and Time Out New York in print and online, Scream magazine, and IndieWire.com. Michael is the author of the “Ad Nauseam” and “Ad Astra” books (1984 Publishing), the novelization of “Nightmare” (Severin), and “The FrightFest Guide to Monster Movies” (FAB Press).

In addition, Michael has directed documentaries and other bonus features, written liner notes, and taken part in audio commentaries for numerous Blu-rays, including the award-winning doc Twisted Tale: The Unmaking of “Spookies” for Vinegar Syndrome. He has created over 25 featurettes covering the filming locations of various genre movies, including the New York City-based “Jacob’s Ladder,” “Bad Lieutenant,” “The Last House on the Left,” “C.H.U.D.,” “Brain Damage,” “Nightmare,” “New York Ninja,” “The Astrologer,” “Massage Parlor Murders” and numerous Italian horror films.

Madeleine Koestner is a writer and film programmer based in NYC. She is the feature film programmer for the Philadelphia Unnamed Film Festival, creator of the Box Set Cinema zine, and a founder of the upcoming Negative Space Cinema, a horror-centric movie theater opening in Brooklyn this fall.
