New Year’s Eve Sunset Hike at Muratie

A mountain view, a picnic and a glass of bubbly — a beautiful way to say farewell to 2026!
Spend the last evening of the year outdoors with friends and family at Muratie Wine Estate. Follow the marked trail through the vineyards to the lookout above the cellar, where sweeping Winelands views stretch towards Table Mountain. A glass of MCC awaits the adults at the top, with a juice for the children.
Settle onto your picnic blanket, unpack something delicious and watch the sun slip below the horizon under the watchful eye of Simonsberg. A Muratie wine station at the lookout will offer red and white wines to purchase by the glass or bottle.
The hike
The circular route is approximately 3.3km in total. Allow 30–45 minutes to reach the lookout, with steps and varied terrain along the way. Trail hours are extended for this special evening, but booking is essential.
Event details
• Venue: Dirtopia Trail Centre, Muratie Wine Estate, off the R44 between Stellenbosch and Klapmuts.
• Arrival: From 18h15. Start hiking no later than 19h15 to reach the lookout before sunset.
• Cost: R250 per person; R110 for scholars under 18. Includes a glass of MCC for adults and one juice for children.
• Descent: All hikers must leave the lookout by 20h30 at the latest. Aim to return to the Trail Centre around 20h30–21h00, depending on your departure time and walking pace. The farm closes 22h00.
What to bring: Wear sturdy walking or hiking shoes and bring your own picnic, water, a blanket to shit on, a warm layer and a torch or headlamp for the walk down. Bring cash or a card if you would like to purchase wine at the lookout. Snacks and cold drinks will also be available at the Trail Centre.
No smoking is allowed on the mountain.
