The autumn air over North Dakota carries a crisp reminder that change is here, bringing a season for reflection, togetherness, and celebration. In New Town, October sparks a profound community spirit that culminates in the highly anticipated New Town HarvestFest. Co-hosted by Nueta Hidatsa Sahnish College and the New Town Chamber, this beautiful celebration honors local culture, collaboration, and hospitality. As the leaves transform into brilliant hues of amber and gold, the community welcomes everyone to a day of joy, connection, and purposeful sharing—reminding us all that is gratitude season. At the heart of the festival is a vibrant local market environment. The New Town Farmers Market setup allows area vendors, artisans, and growers to display exceptional local craftsmanship, seasonal produce, and home-baked goods. Creativity takes center stage with the competitive Pumpkin Decorating Contest, hosted by the New Town City Library. Open to all ages, participants can paint and design a unique pumpkin individually or as a team. To keep the focus on surface artistry, carved pumpkins are not accepted. The stakes are high, with over $500 in prizes across various categories, making it a central attraction. Honoring a deep commitment to sustainability, the Four Sisters Garden (the signature agricultural initiative at NHSC) presents its traditional harvest share. Attendees can donate excess produce or freely take home fresh, locally grown heirloom crops, reinforcing tribal food sovereignty and communal care. Families can also enjoy festive bounce houses, large outdoor games, face painters, live music, and a dedicated fall photoshoot area. Cozy food options—including a popular soup fundraiser, popcorn, and warm coffee—keep everyone energized. The New Town HarvestFest represents the true essence of local pride, generosity, and the comforting warmth of a community standing together.
