Module 9: Neurological Testing for the Manual Therapist
Phase 3 — Movement Therapy Diploma (Level 4/5) | 40 Guided Learning Hours
Learn to perform and interpret a complete neurological screen — peripheral and cranial — and to recognise and act on the red flags that matter most in manual therapy practice. The module blends self-paced online study with a hands-on practical day, then assesses you through video demonstrations and documentation.
Prerequisite: You must have completed at least a Level 5 qualification if you have not completed the Movement Therapy Phase 2 modules.
Part A — Pre-Course Work (online, MTE Thinkific Portal)
Complete before you attend. Delivered as pre-recorded chapters worked through in your own time, with neuroanatomy taught via Learn Anatomy Online.
You'll cover: plexus anatomy (brachial & lumbosacral), the organisation of the nervous system, the MTE assessment paperwork, disc herniations and nerve-root compression, reflex testing, peripheral nerve testing, and cranial nerve anatomy.
Alongside the chapters you'll complete the Plexus Quiz (10 questions), the Introduction to the Nervous System Quiz (18 questions), and the Neuro Testing Worksheet (referenced in Harvard style and uploaded as a PDF).
Part B — Face-to-Face Practical Day
Testing kit is provided, but bring a patella hammer, cotton wool, a neuro-tip, hot/cold vials and a tuning fork if you have them.
09:30–10:00 — Welcome, introductions, and a walkthrough of the assignment remit
10:00–11:00 — Referred vs radicular pain vs radiculopathy; lower-limb testing (reflexes, myotomes, dermatomes)
11:00–11:15 — Break
11:15–12:30 — Upper-limb testing (reflexes, myotomes, dermatomes) and sensation testing practice
12:30–13:15 — Lunch
13:15–14:00 — Red-flag triage: Cauda Equina, MSCC and the safety-net card; reporting decisions
14:00–14:15 — Break
14:15–15:15 — Cranial nerve testing: the one-minute screen and a review of all twelve nerves
15:15–15:30 — Break
15:30–16:30 — Special and neurodynamic testing: Spurling's, Adson's, SLR, Slump, and the Femoral/Median/Radial/Ulnar tension tests
16:30–17:00 — UMN vs LMN review; putting it all together — clinical reasoning and reporting
Post-Course Assessments (6-week window after the practical day)
Assessed through ten submission points on the MTE Thinkific Portal:
Plexus Quiz and Introduction to the Nervous System Quiz (online)
Neuro Testing Worksheet, plus its feedback upload
Peripheral Neuro Testing Video (~10 minutes, unlisted YouTube link), plus its feedback upload
Cranial Nerve Assessment Video (~1 minute, unlisted YouTube link), plus its feedback upload
Completed peripheral and cranial nerve assessment forms (matching your videos)
All post-Part B work has a 6-week submission window; late work is accepted but capped at a pass.
