About this Event
Darebin Council is participating in Victoria's Net Swap Program to help reduce wildlife injuries caused by illegal fruit tree netting.
In Victoria, it is illegal to use or sell household fruit tree netting with a mesh size greater than 5mm x 5mm at full stretch. Larger mesh netting can entangle, injure and K*ll native wildlife, including birds, possums, reptiles and threatened grey-headed flying-foxes.
The Net Swap Program provides residents with an opportunity to replace unsafe netting with a wildlife-safe alternative while learning more about legal fruit tree netting requirements.
How it works
If you are a Darebin resident:
- Check your netting using the finger poke test: if your finger fits through the mesh, it should be replaced.
- Bring your illegal netting to the event for recycling - drop in anytime between 12:30pm and 2:00pm.
- Eligible Darebin residents can receive one free replacement product per household (while stocks last). Proof of residency required.
Replacement options
Eligible residents can receive ONE of the following:
- Wildlife-safe fitted insect netting
- Fruit protection bags (10 pack)
- Fruit protection sleeves (5 pack)
Good to know
- Free to attend.
- Multiple nets can be dropped off, but only one replacement product is available per household.
- Limited stock available.
By swapping your netting, you'll help reduce wildlife entanglements and support a safer environment for Darebin's native animals.
