About this Event
Jim Affolter, President of the Neskowin Historical Foundation, will be presenting on the late Stephen Beckham’s book entitled, Nestucca, Nechesne, and Siletz: Indians of the North-Central Oregon Coast.
The new book brings to contemporary readers the cultural and literary information of the Nestucca, Nechense (Salmon River), and Siletz tribes as recorded by Dr. Boas and supplemented by his 1890 travel diary. The volume includes the historical context of what happened to these Indians, the southernmost speakers of a Salishan language widely found on Puget Sound. It also includes a section of their place names in Tillamook and Lincoln counties recorded between 1855 and 1880 by George Davidson of the U.S. Coast Survey.
Jim and his wife, Marilyn, are residents of Neskowin, and he has deep roots in south Tillamook County.
The Neskowin Historical Foundation is a community-driven non-profit dedicated to uncovering and preserving the history of Neskowin, Oregon, over the past 150 years. Their goal is to ensure that this important information is easily accessible to everyone, through both printed publications and digital platforms.
