Nerve Safety in Rope: Anatomy, Injury Response & Practical Tools**
Workshop Description:
Do you know what to do in the event of a nerve injury? What we do carries risk, and while we can’t eliminate that risk entirely, having a solid understanding of anatomy allows us to reduce or mitigate it.
Nerve safety isn’t just about technique. It’s about protecting the people we care about most in rope. Whether you’re a rigger or a rope bottom, knowing how to recognise, prevent, and respond to nerve issues is a vital part of responsible play.
This 3 hour info-based workshop explores how to recognise, prevent, and respond to nerve issues in rope. We’ll cover key nerve pathways, how to tell the difference between circulation and nerve compression, what to do if an injury occurs, and how to prepare the body with mobilisation and stretching techniques.
No rope or partner required. There is a small component of partner-assisted stretching, with the option to pair up or simply observe.
About the Presenter:
Presented by James (@bound_by_rope) who brings a unique clinical lens to rope through his background as a remedial massage therapist and musculoskeletal specialist. Tying since 2019 and running his own clinic since 2017, James specialises in injury prevention, mobility, and functional anatomy, combining those skills with a deep passion for connection and care in rope.
He will be assisted by his rope partner Ava (@ava_d_angel) who brings a wealth of experience and insight from the perspective of a rope bottom.
Who should attend?
Riggers, bottoms, switches, all levels welcome. This workshop is designed to empower anyone who ties or is tied with the knowledge and awareness to keep their rope practice safer and more sustainable.

Once the workshop wraps up, T.I.E.S will be happening directly after, so stick around to tie, indulge, explore, and socialise over a delicious BBQ in a relaxed, no-pressure setting with light music and chill vibes. It’s the perfect opportunity to practise what you’ve learned, ask questions, or simply connect with fellow rope enthusiasts in a friendly, welcoming environment.
Our final T.I.E.S of the year will also double as the Newcastle Shibari Christmas Party, a chance to celebrate a wonderful year of rope and the community that has grown alongside it. This special event is about spending time with the people who have helped build Newcastle Shibari by attending classes and events, offering support, or contributing in the many other ways. We’ll be embracing some Christmas-themed ties and snacks, sharing good company, and running a festive raffle with prizes to say thank you and mark the close of the year together.
T.I.E.S is a ticketed event. Tickets can be purchased here: https://www.newcastleshibari.com.au/t-i-e-s
