Bob Minckley presents - Secrets your parents kept from you about bees and flowers
Where the earth is not covered by oceans or ice, bees have an oversized ecological role. Poor plants can't move to find a mate, so bees make sure plants reproduce. Plants compete for the attention of these reproductive facilitators (meaning bees) and make flowers that can be showy, perfumed or dripping with nectar. Appreciating bees therefore is a window into how the natural world functions and why it is so colorful.
Bob Minckley is a transplant to Rochester from Arizona and still adjusting to all the water, greenery and lack of mountains near town needed for his orientation. Fortunately after 20 years, he has a few routes memorized. Bob is lucky to be in the Dept of Biology at the University of Rochester among friends, and teaching undergraduates about the wonders of bees, elephants, humans, bacteria and ecosystems. Rochester has grown on him too.
Richard Kraude presents - Predicting the Future: What really is AI and will it K*ll us all
This presentation will begin with a brief, but detailed explanation of how 'AI' works along with the history of its development. Using interactive tools to demonstrate its strengths and weaknesses, this talk will help us interpret the media's constant doom and gloom headlines. Richard will also share the latest advancements while putting them into a historical context to give a clear picture of what the future most likely will turn out.
Richard is a recovering academic, having taught and conducted research for 7 years in the information systems department at UB's Business School. He has published several articles and received his Ph.D. from Michigan State in Operations and supply chain management. Before his transition to Economics, Richard was a chemist, developing polymers for use in infrastructure repair after obtaining a Masters in Chemistry from University of Oregon. Richard is also an avid gardener (former Master gardener), guitarist, carpenter, surfer, reluctant golfer, but above all, identifies just as another Earthling.
Deboshree Roy presents - Shazam! How your phone knows that song before you do
Ever wondered how Shazam recognizes a song in seconds, even in a noisy room? Debs will break down the clever computer science behind it, from sound waves and audio fingerprints to the algorithms that make matching millions of songs possible. Through a game of Name That Tune, fun visualizations, and live experiments, we’ll explore how Shazam works, why it’s so fast, and when it gets stumped!
Debs is a data scientist fascinated by the intersection of technology, creativity, and everyday life. She loves exploring the clever ideas behind the tech we use and finding fun ways to make them accessible. Outside of work, she’s usually listening to music, obsessing over cats, or picking up yet another hobby.
