Neil Thompson | How AI is Transforming Science
Progress in science and technology plays an outsized role in shaping economic growth. The automation of scientific tasks by AI, thus offers the possibility of not only amazing discoveries, but of an unprecedented time of economic growth. But automating science faces the same challenges as the rest of economy: the emergence of bottlenecks, the high cost of running these large systems, and the challenge of whether AI is sufficiently accurate / capable / robust to be used.
In this talk, Neil will draw on insights from work that MIT FutureTech has done to help understand how the automation of science is proceeding and what it will mean for the economy. In particular, he will discuss: the tasks that AI is being used for in science (guided by our new taxonomy of scientific tasks), the use of foundation models in the scientific literature, how AI is replacing other algorithms for non-human tasks in science, and where there are AI scientific “fast-lanes” where progress is already happening rapidly.
