Athletes will have a designated warm-up area away from their course. At the beginning of an athlete's scheduled wave, they will be given a "course walk-through" describing the course, specific rules for the course, time limits (typically 2 to 4 minutes depending on the course) and how to earn points. Athletes will not be allowed to touch any of the obstacles before or during the walkthrough. (This is a fundamental part of the sport, taking your training and figuring out how to adapt to new challenges). Then the athletes will be given an opportunity to plan out their approach to the course (with help from any coaches), before they get to run on the course with a course judge awarding points and capturing their time. If time permits at the end of an athlete's wave, they will have "redemption time" to go back and challenge themselves on the obstacles. Novices (first year competing) - Courses will include basic, but creative obstacles. Although there will be a live leader board, athletes can earn ribbons for achieving milestones: Outstanding Run (at least 70% but below 85% of possible points), Top Finisher (85% or more of possible points), or High Score (course clear or highest score in the division). Each run earns only its highest milestone.
Beginners (second year or more competing, but not considering themselves advanced) - Courses will include basic, but creative obstacles. Although there will be a live leader board, athletes earn ribbons for achieving milestones: Outstanding Run (at least 80% but below 90% of possible points), Top Finisher (90% or more of possible points), or High Score (course clear or highest score in the division). Each run earns only its highest milestone.
Advanced (ready for a higher level of challenges beyond the basics) - Courses will include some basic, but a variety of increasingly difficult obstacles. At this level, medals are awarded to the top 3 finishers.
13+_Pro (ready to compete at the national level against top ninja athletes in the world) - Courses will be increasingly challenging with athletes getting three tries to complete each obstacle within the time limit in accordance with the Ninja Sport Championshp Hybrid course rules. Medals are awarded to the top 3 finishers.
Generally speaking, athletes can compete at the highest level they choose for the season (typically taking the advice from a trusted coach), with the exception that only first year competitors can compete in a Novice division. Our competition will follow NCL rules and age/categories based on your age as of January 1, 2027.
