The New Bedford Harbor Sea Chantey Chorus sings sea chanties and other maritime music. It was founded in 2001 as a volunteer activity of the Schooner Ernestina, now ISSV Ernestina-Morrissey. This year’s program celebrates the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence by focusing on three corners of colonial era, maritime trade: New

What It Is
The New Bedford Harbor Sea Chantey Chorus is a non‑audition,
community‑based group singing traditional maritime “sea chanteys” and related songs, active since 2001 and based in New Bedford, MA. Formed in 2001 by Tom Goix and Polly Zajac, the chorus is one of the oldest active sea music groups on the East Coast. It has about 30 members of varied backgrounds and skill levels, and it performs without formal auditions. The group’s repertoire is rooted in sea chanteys—songs historically sung on ships to coordinate work like raising sails or anchors, often with repetitive, call‑and‑response patterns.
