About this Event
Nature of New York: An Augmented Reality Walking Art Tour
Discover Manhattan's Indigenous history and natural landscape through augmented reality!
Join artist Jose Carmona on Sunday, November 15, 2026, at 12:00 PM, for Nature of New York, a free, immersive augmented reality (AR) walking art tour in Inwood Hill Park, Manhattan.
This interactive outdoor art experience invites visitors to explore Manhattan's landscape during the 17th century, before European colonization dramatically transformed the island's environment and Indigenous communities.
Using your mobile device, you'll discover life-size augmented reality illustrations created by Jose Carmona, bringing historical landscapes, wildlife, and elements of Lenape life into the present day.
What to Expect
During this guided walking tour, participants will visit three locations within Inwood Hill Park, each featuring unique AR artwork and educational experiences.
- Shorakkopoch Rock: Discover animals that once inhabited Manhattan, including elk, black bears, and gray wolves. Explore Lenape perspectives that challenge the commonly told myth of Manhattan's supposed sale and examine the devastating effects of colonization on Indigenous life and the natural environment.
- Salt Marsh: Explore the relationship between the Lenape people and Manhattan's waterways, including the natural resources and aquatic environments that supported their communities.
- Inwood Hill Nature Center: Discover traditional Lenape dwellings, native vegetation, and plant life that shaped the island's environment before widespread colonial development.
About the Artwork
All illustrations featured in Nature of New York are original, hand-created digital artworks by Jose Carmona, produced without the use of artificial intelligence.
Through augmented reality, these illustrations appear within the park's landscape, allowing visitors to experience art, nature, and history together without physically altering the environment.
Developed with guidance from the Lenape Center, the project emphasizes Lenape perspectives, cultural history, and the continuing presence of Lenape communities today.
