Foraging the Smokies - Discover the foods, medicines, and natural resources early settlers gathered along Mingus Creek.
About this Event

Explore the resources settlers foraged for food, medicine, and other supplies in our Smoky Mountains. We'll walk the shaded level road that follows Mingus Creek, which once was home to numerous families who met on Saturdays at Mingus Mill where "goods and gossip" were traded while they waited their turn.

  • Meet in the parking lot for Mingus Mill. (The Mingus Creek Trail begins from the parking area for the historic Mingus Mill. Although not technically on the trail, this is a must-see stop before proceeding on your hike).
  • Bring water, snacks, bug repellant, and rain gear "in case".

Ila Hatter has been teaching UT's Smoky Mtn Field School for 35 years, John C. Campbell Folk School, Gatlinburg's Spring Wildflower Pilgrimage, and given many lectures and workshops in 4 states. She is one of the women featured in the book "Women of the Smokies."
