About this Event
Come to the White House to meet textile artist Lesley Robinson and find out how to use kitchen waste and plants to dye fabric. This session is suitable for complete beginners and anyone who wants to learn this traditional and sustainable way of dyeing fabric and yarn.
We will be using a selection of natural materials to achieve different colour shades of dye on a silk fabric. At the end of this hands-on session, you will have your own naturally dyed silk square to take home to use in a textile project.
We will look at which plants can be grown in the UK for natural dyeing and choose what to plant in our White House garden next year.
We will provide light refreshments during the session (tea and cake).
The workshop is for adults and children over 10 yrs old.
Lesley Robinson is part of Thurrock-based textile group Kite Spirit, whose textile pieces feature in St Catherine’s Church, East Tilbury, St Stephen’s Church, Purfleet, and Tilbury Cruise Terminal. She experiments with dyeing yarn and fabric using natural dyes and has been developing a natural dye garden in Purfleet.
This session is part of our Garden Club programme at the White House.
