Join the Rhode Island Historical Society on Monday, November 9th at 6pm for the presentation Nathanael Greene, Rhode Island, and the Race to the Dan by author Andrew Waters. In this program, Waters explores how Nathanael Greene’s Rhode Island upbringing shaped his military leadership during the Revolutionary War, focusing on the Race to the Dan—Greene’s strategic retreat across North and South Carolina. As commander of the Continental Army’s overmatched Southern Department, Greene relied on adaptation, resilience, and critical thinking to outmaneuver Charles Cornwallis and help prevent the British from regaining control of the South. Through pivotal moments in the Race to the Dan, Waters examines how Greene’s early life and experiences in Rhode Island influenced the leadership qualities that made his campaign so consequential.
Andrew Waters is the author of three books on the American Revolution in the South, including To the End of the World: Nathanael Greene, Charles Cornwallis, and the Race to the Dan. His most recent book, Backcountry War: The Rise Francis Marion, Banastre Tarleton, and Thomas Sumter was a finalist for the American Battlefield Trust’s “Book Prize for History.” After an early career in editing and publishing, he has spent the majority of his career working in land conservation. Andrew is a North Carolina native, where he currently resides with his wife, Anne, and cat, Romeo.
