Institutt for Psykoterapi (Oslo) is proud to present a full-day clinical seminar with one of the biggest names within psychotherapy today: Dr. Nancy McWilliams (PhD). She and her husband, dr. Michael Garrett (MD), are coming to Oslo and Litteraturhuset on September 25th, 2026. Together they will give the presentation «Rupture and Repair: The value of working through». I sin presentasjon vil dr. McWilliams og dr. Garrett belyse betydningen av den terapeutiske alliansen for utfall i psykoterapi. Denne skapes og utvikles i et dynamisk relasjonelt samspill mellom terapeut og pasient, og ofte oppstår det situasjoner underveis i behandlingen der alliansen skades eller blir satt på på prøve. Håndteringen av slike situasjoner viser seg å være avgjørende for det videre utfallet av terapien. Dr. McWilliams og dr. Garrett vil illustrere hvordan gjennomarbeidingen («working through») av slike situasjoner en viktig del av en psykodynamisk terapiprosess, og ikke en hindring som må «fikses» for at den egentlige behandlingen kan fortsette.
Tematikken vil bli belyst gjennom empiriske data og psykoanalytisk teori i kombinasjon med rikholdige kliniske eksempler fra behandlinger av ulik alvorlighetsgrad.
Vi er ekstra glade for at dr. McWilliams og dr. Garrett også vil drøfte disse temaene opp mot pasienter med alvorlig psykisk lidelse (psykose) – en gruppe som ofte blir oversett når det kommer til psykoterapeutisk behandling og forståelse.

In their presentation, dr. McWilliams & dr. Garrett will review the vital contribution of the therapeutic alliance to therapy outcome, and how it is created and evolves in a dynamic relational interplay between therapist and patient. During the treatment process, situations occur when the alliance is damaged or put to the test, and the handling of such situations prove essential for therapy outcome. Dr. McWilliams & dr. Garrett will illustrate how the working through of such situations are an essential part of a psychodynamic therapy process, and not some obstacle to be overcome for the real treatment to proceed.
These concepts will be illustrated through empirical research, psychoanalytic theory and ample clinical case examples of different severity.
We are extra pleased that dr. McWilliams and dr. Garrett also will adress these issues in relation to severe mental illness (psychosis) – a patient group that is often overlooked in their need for psychotherapeutic treatment and understanding.
