Fins Attached: Saving Sharks, Protecting Our Oceans
Speaker Biographies:
Dr. Alex Antoniou has dedicated more than 30 years to shark research and conservation. He began his career in 1994 with the Shark Research Institute, where he became the first to tag whale sharks in the Caribbean with satellite transmitters, tracking their movements across thousands of miles and to great depths. His conservation work has taken him around the world, including Honduras, Costa Rica, the Galápagos, Cocos Island, and the Revillagigedo Islands. He has played a key role in securing protections for whale sharks and other shark species through international advocacy, including at CITES, and helped lead efforts that resulted in the protection of the oceanic whitetip shark in the United States. In 2010, he founded Fins Attached, where he currently serves as CEO, and in 2017 acquired a 134-foot research vessel, Sharkwater, to expand the organization’s conservation and research efforts. His work has earned international recognition, including the 2017 Shark Guardian of the Year award, and he continues to advance shark conservation through research, advocacy, education, and global partnerships.
Dr. Mauricio Hoyos has spent more than 25 years advancing shark research and conservation. He is the Director and Co-founder of Pelagios Kakunjá and Chief Scientist for Fins Attached. Based in La Paz, Mexico, Dr. Hoyos has conducted research on shark ecology, behavior, reproduction, movement patterns, and habitat use in the Gulf of California, Guadalupe Island, the Revillagigedo Archipelago, Cocos Island, Malpelo, and the British Virgin Islands. He serves on the scientific committees of several marine reserves in Mexico and has made public education a key part of his conservation work, giving more than 300 presentations to audiences ranging from elementary school students to university groups. His work has earned numerous international honors, including the Rob Stewart Ocean Conservationist of the Year and Wildlife Protection Alliance Conservationist of the Year awards in 2025. He has also served as a scientific advisor for documentaries produced by National Geographic and Discovery Channel and has published 96 peer-reviewed scientific articles.
