Nadine White: Powered by Experience (In-Person Ticket)

The University of Bedfordshire is delighted to welcome multi-award-winning journalist, filmmaker and founder of Black Current News, Nadine White, as the next speaker in our ‘Powered by Experience’ lecture series.

Taking place on the Luton campus, this special event – coinciding with Black History Month and supported by the Bedfordshire Cross Sector Race Equality Forum – is free to attend and will give attendees the opportunity to hear first-hand insights from Nadine as she delivers a keynote before joining a panel of students and staff to explore what it takes to build a meaningful career, tell stories that are often overlooked, and create something of your own.

Nadine’s keynote will draw on more than a decade in journalism and filmmaking, including her role as Britain’s first dedicated Race Correspondent, to explore how she has built a career through telling stories that mainstream media often overlooks. From local newsrooms to national press, founding Black Current News and making her box-office hit documentary Barrel Children: The Families Windrush Left Behind, Nadine will share what she has learned about building something of your own, navigating risks and setbacks, and finding purpose in your work.

This event forms part of the University’s ongoing commitment to Career-Powered Education, connecting students with influential voices and real-world expertise to inspire ambition, confidence and impact.

Nadine White will deliver a keynote drawing on more than a decade in journalism and filmmaking to explore how she has built a career through telling stories that mainstream media often overlooks.

As Britain’s first dedicated Race Correspondent, Nadine will trace her path from local newsrooms to the national press, sharing the experiences, opportunities and challenges that have shaped her career. She will reflect on the founding of Black Current News, her award-winning platform dedicated to amplifying stories and perspectives that are often underrepresented in mainstream media, and the making of her debut documentary, Barrel Children: The Families Windrush Left Behind, which became a UK box-office hit.

The event will examine what it takes to build something of your own, from having the confidence to pursue an idea to navigating the risks, setbacks and difficult decisions that come with creating something new. Nadine will also consider the importance of representation and purpose in journalism and filmmaking, reflecting on what she has learned throughout her career and what she would tell anyone starting out in the industry now.

Following the keynote, Nadine will join a panel of students and staff to explore these themes further, offering practical insights into career development, finding your voice, navigating change and creating opportunities for yourself in a competitive industry.

Nadine White is a multi-award-winning journalist and filmmaker, and founder of Black Current News. Her career has spanned HuffPost UK, The Voice Newspaper, the local press and The Independent, where in 2021 she became Britain’s first dedicated Race Correspondent.

A Forbes 30 Under 30 honouree, she has been recognised by the British Journalism Awards, Amnesty International and the Houses of Parliament, and was the first Black reporter shortlisted for the Paul Foot Award for investigative journalism.

Her debut documentary, Barrel Children: The Families Windrush Left Behind (2023), became a UK box-office hit and won her the Menelik Shabazz Legacy Award at the Windrush Caribbean Film Festival.

Raised in Brixton, Nadine has been featured by Condé Nast, The Guardian and the BBC, and named among the Most Influential People of African Descent under 40.
