About this Event
Mystic Makers: The Magic Mirror
A Family Art Workshop inspired by Layla and the Magic Mirror by Carolyn Sajit
Ages 4–12
90 minutes
In the PRS LIBRARY
This edition of the workshop is part of our September series, “"
This time we are stepping through the looking glass with a story about a girl named Layla, a mysterious mirror, and a hidden friend named Zara who helps her find the courage to speak up. The twist? The real magic was never in the glass. It was Layla's own voice, all along.
In this workshop, mirrors aren't about telling fortunes, they're about seeing yourself more clearly, and finding the courage to show that self to the world. We'll pair Layla's story with real artists who've used mirrors to reflect, multiply, frame, and reveal, turning a simple household object into a tool for imagination.
This workshop blends storytelling, art, and gentle self-discovery. Kids and grown-ups alike will explore courage, self-expression, and the idea that the most important magic is already inside you.
Materials Provided
A copy of the story, mirror-frame craft supplies (hand mirrors, decorating materials, and more), and a take-home Mystic Maker mirror to keep the reflection and the courage. FAmilies are welcome to bring their own handheld mirrors from home, but not necessary.
Good to Know
Because the age range is wide, activities are gently adapted for younger, middle, and older kids throughout the session — everyone creates something to their own comfort level.
About the teacher:
dama (Amanda Maciel Antunes) is a Brazilian, self-taught multidisciplinary artist based in Los Angeles and a librarian at the Philosophical Research Society, where she founded and hosts the Surrealist Study Group, a monthly gathering centered on women artists and writers who looked beyond the visible world for inspiration. Her own transdisciplinary practice spans painting, writing, sound, and durational performance, and is rooted in memory, ritual, mythology and the spiritual undercurrents that connect generations of women artists and mystics.
Through Mystic Makers, dama invites children and families into that same sense of wonder, guiding them to discover that art can be a doorway to dreams, symbols, and hidden worlds of wisdom.
