Iestyn Edwards is an Olivier Award winning international variety headline and bass-baritone. He won the Millennial Busker of the Year competition and is proud to be the BBC Woman’s Hour Forces’ Sweetheart.None of this helped when he was flown out to entertain British troops in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Wearing a tutu.
He has lived to tell New Street the tale - in spite of Stacks, a Royal Marines Commando, who thought a bullet with his name on it wasn’t nearly enough and planned to chew his name into a hand grenade.
Before being flown out by the Ministry of Defence to entertain British frontline troops in Iraq and Afghanistan, Edwards had performed at the Barbican, National Theatre and in recital for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II onboard HMS Victory. Now suddenly here he is appearing on a tank turret in Basra APOD in a snow white ballet tutu.
Just as the insurgents begin shelling...
The first half of My Tutu Went AWOL! is the poignant, laugh-out-loud account of how Edwards survived flack attacks, incoming rockets, desert fever and Stacks, a notorious Royal Marines Commando - an account that has been widely hailed across the UK literary, media and corporate sectors.
Oh, and also in some fun places.
After the interval – a chance for folk to enjoy the great range of food and drink at New Street - we meet the legendary Madame Galina Ballet Star Galactica herself in the ‘bonkers diva brilliance’ (Evening Standard) floor show as directed for her in Iraq by none other than Welsh comic genius Rhod Gilbert.
‘Achingly funny!’ Daily Mail
‘Spreads a bow-wave of happiness....the voice of an angel.’ Dame Joanna Lumley
‘A story unlike any other. Totally mad, very funny and highly recommended. *****’ Adam Kay, author of This is Going to Hurt. The Nation’s Favourite Book (Guardian)
