About this Event
What does it take to stay connected when our deepest beliefs pull us apart?
The new documentary, My Omaha, follows filmmaker Nick Beaulieu as he returns to his hometown of Omaha, NE, to document the city’s racial justice movement while trying to reconnect with his terminally ill, conservative father. Through his relationship with community organizer Leo Louis II, Nick confronts a side of his hometown—and himself—that he had not fully seen.
My Omaha premieres October 5 on PBS’s Independent Lens. On Friday, October 23, First Presbyterian Church of Portland's Service Beyond Our Walls committee invites the congregation, downtown neighbors, students, and the wider Portland community to watch the film together in the FPC Chapel.
In a time when political and social divisions make honest conversation harder, My Omaha asks what it takes to tell the truth about injustice, listen across deep disagreement, and remain in relationship when deeply held beliefs pull us apart. The evening gives us a chance to practice something many of us need to recover: respectful dialogue that neither avoids hard truths nor asks us to set aside our convictions.
- Doors open at 5:30 pm, film begins at 6:00 pm. After the film, Nick and Leo will join us live for a conversation with the audience.
- This is a free event and all in our community are welcome. Space is limited so RSVPs are not required but are requested.
- Free parking will be available in our underground parking garage on 12th.
