Why: We still live in 1986. No, really- look at your playlists, movies and fashion. All of it wears the seal of the long-gone era of bright-coloured, neon-like, synth-powered pop culture. But how did we end up like this? Why are the 1980s still a part of our nostalgic moodboard? And, most importantly, how did the music revolution of 1977-1984 make that happen? Who: Nikolay Ovchinnikov is the musical journalist. With 15 years of experience across different media (including Delfi and Volna), hundreds of articles, podcasts, videos, and even one book on pop culture, he now revisits our past and focuses on music nostalgia and researches the influence of the new wave era on so-called ‘post-Soviet’ and Baltic music scenes.
What: In his lecture, Nikolay wants to discuss these issues with you. Because we are all affected by this nice dream of neon wilderness. Using memes and jokes, archive videos, and audio samples, he will try to give you a brief picture of the phenomenon and inspire you to dig deeper or/and listen to more interesting music.
Subjects: synthesisers, Kraftwerk, Human League, Ultravox, Moog, Roland, Duran Duran, drums, sound engineering, Depeche Mode, Boy George, Tears for Fears, Zodiac, Dzeltenie Pastnieki, Kino, GTA Vice City, Molchat Doma, brutalism, The Weeknd, Charli XCX, “Drive”, “Stranger Things”, neon, synthpop, new wave, new romantic,
How: We will talk about the music, listen to and discuss the most important works of the synth era, and watch the methods and instruments. Maybe dance later if you want.
How long: 90-120 minutes (lecture + questions)
